How to Brew a Good Cup of Coffee

1. Espresso

Strong. Rich. Concentrated.

You’ll Need: Espresso machine, fine grind coffee (espresso roast)
Ratio: ~18–20g of coffee for a double shot (yielding 36–40g espresso)
Brew Time: 25–30 seconds

Steps:

Use a fine grind and tamp evenly in the portafilter.

Brew under ~9 bars of pressure.

Look for rich crema and balanced flavor.

Ideal for lattes, cappuccinos, or straight shots.

2. French Press

Full-bodied. Bold. Unfiltered.

You’ll Need: French press, coarse grind
Ratio: 1:15 coffee to water (e.g., 30g coffee to 450ml water)
Brew Time: 4 minutes

Steps:

Add coffee and hot water (just off boil).

Stir, steep for 4 minutes.

Slowly press the plunger and serve.

Great for highlighting rich, earthy notes.

3. Pour-Over (e.g. V60 or Chemex)

Clean. Bright. Balanced.

You’ll Need: Pour-over dripper, filter, medium grind
Ratio: 1:16 coffee to water
Brew Time: 3–4 minutes

Steps:

Rinse filter, add ground coffee.

Pour a little water to “bloom” (let gases escape).

Continue pouring in slow circles until desired volume is reached.

Ideal for lighter roasts and delicate flavors.

4. Drip Coffee (Coffee Maker)

Convenient. Familiar. Smooth.

You’ll Need: Standard coffee maker, medium grind
Ratio: 1–2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 oz water
Brew Time: Automatic (5–10 minutes)

Steps:

Add coffee to filter basket.

Add water to reservoir and start the machine.

Wait for brewing to finish and enjoy.

Best for batch brewing and everyday ease.

5. Cold Brew

Smooth. Low-acid. Refreshing.

You’ll Need: Cold brew jar or French press, coarse grind
Ratio: 1:4 for concentrate (e.g. 1 cup coffee to 4 cups water)
Brew Time: 12–18 hours (steeped cold)

Steps:

Mix coffee and cold water.

Steep in fridge or room temp for 12–18 hrs.

Strain and dilute 1:1 (or to taste) with water or milk.

Perfect for hot days or iced lattes.
